Allgadgets Ltd. are a significant importer and international trader in night vision systems, binoculars, and other optical products. They have also supplied a number of mail order companies including Innovations, House of Bath, Great Universal Stores, Past Times, Viking Direct and others.
Allgadgets are experienced in the requirements of mail order selling and when they have goods left over from the mail order campaigns of these large operators they offer them on the web site, either as a general catalogue item or as a disposal line.
Requirements
The requirements for the AllGadgets web site were to provide an Internet site where Allgadgets could sell these products. It needed to:
- Contain hundreds of products.
- Be easily expandable to thousands of products, if necessary.
- Provide good photographs and descriptions of the equipment.
- Be secure.
- Incorporate an advanced search facility.
- Provide a tele-sales facility.
The Solution
The solution for AllGadgets was to use Microsoft Site Server Commerce Edition with significant customisation by Discover IT to tailor it to requirements.
It runs on a Windows 2000 Server with IIS-5. It uses a SQL Server 7 database to contain the product information which is dynamically published when a page is loaded.
It was developed using Active Server Pages (ASP) written in VBScript. |

The shop currently contains about 500 products in 10 different “departments” but also has the capacity for thousands more products.
Each product is displayed on its own page with a photograph, description and price generated from the database. |
The site also includes an advanced search tool, written by Discover IT, which provides a full-text search on the product database, searching on both product titles and descriptions.
The search can be on combinations of search words and also word stems. |

The comprehensive shopping basket system supports orders from any country in the world.
VAT is added where appropriate and shipping costs are calculated from comprehensive shipping tables based on weight of the products and 12 country zones.
Several payment methods are allowed but credit card payment is done by offline credit card clearance. The site is secured with a digital security certificate from Thawte. |
The AllGadgets site also has a tele-sales feature programmed by Discover IT which allows orders to be taken by phone and entered immediately into the database. It allows for the quotation of custom pricing and shipping and also custom products, where necessary.
The site is responsive and easy to use and provides an excellent medium for selling “Gadgets” of all kinds.
