Verreaux Eagle Owl

(Bubo Lacteus)

Origin: Much of the African continent.
Nesting: A pair of Verreaux owls need many thousands of acres of land in which to breed. Eggs are laid at intervals of five days.
Facts: This owl is commonly called the Milky Eagle owl. It is the largest and most powerful of the owls in Africa and preys on large animals such as Vervet monkeys, secretary birds and hares. It is not uncommon to see this owl in  the daytime perched in an acacia tree.

This owl has characteristic pink eyelids which, it is thought, may be used for signalling.
