Tawny Owl

Origin: In Europe, as far north as Scandinavia, from Britain eastwards to China and southwards to North Africa.
Habitat: Mostly broad-leaved woodland, parkland and even cities.
Nesting: Does not build nest but lays in nest boxes and tree hollows. Usually 2-4 eggs in March or early April.
Facts: This is the most common owl in Britain. Everyone hears this owl at the dead of night - this is the owl that hoots. The Tawny Owl is quite large approximately 38 cms (15 inches) in length. - bigger than the Barn Owl . It is a dark brown colour streaked with black and buff but some can appear grey.

These owls feed on small birds and mammals, frogs and large insects. They also have a silent flight and fly mainly at the dead of night although you may see them at dusk. Average males weigh 590 gms, females 700 gms.
