Red-Tailed Hawk

Red-Tailed Hawk

(Buteo Jamaciensis)

Origin: The most widespread of the buteo species in North America.
Habitat: It can be found in a wide variety of habitats from Alaska in the north to the deserts in the south, in woodland, open plains and prairies.
Nesting: Builds a large nest from sticks and twigs, in trees or a rocky ledge. It usually lays 2 - 5 eggs (white with red-brown blotches) which hatch after 4 - 5 weeks.
Facts: The plumage of the Red-Tailed Hawk can be very variable, but the adult is easily identifiable by its bright red tail.

This hawk spends many hours in flight searching for prey, using thermals to maintain height, but it will also find a suitable perch to watch for prey. It feeds mainly on small rodents but will also prey on snakes, birds and insects.
