Long Eared Owl(Asio otus)

| Origin: | Temperate regions of Europe, including Britain, and eastwards to Japan. Also across the USA and Canada. | |||
| Habitat: | Woodlands and fields. | |||
| Nesting: | Often in old magpie nests or occasionally on the ground. It lays 4 or 5 eggs in March or early April. | |||
| Facts: | The Long-eared Owl has distinctive ear tufts
on the top of its head which are not ears. The ears are situated at the side of the head.
The owl raises or lowers its tufts depending on its mood. It is approximately 35 cms (14
inches) in length with buff and brown mottled plumage. This owl roosts by day and hunts at night which makes it one of the more difficult owls to find. It feeds on small mammals and birds. |
