Kookabura

Kookabura
bird call

Kookaburra

(Dacelo Novaeguinae)

Origin: East and South West Australia.
Habitat: Forests and Woodland.
Nesting: This bird usually nests in an unlined cavity in a tree trunk or branch.
Facts: This bird is in the same family as the kingfisher. It is by far the largest and is usually found away from water in forests.

It is approximately 45cm in length and can be recognised by its blunt heavy bill and the dark eyestripe. It feeds mainly on insects, rodents and small birds. The females can be distinguished by the different plumage on their tail feathers. The male has light feathers at the top of the tail whereas the female's feathers are brown at the top of the tail.

Their unusual call gave rise to their strange name, an imitation. The call is mainly to mark their territory. Click on the bird call icon at the top of this page to hear it.
