Great Horned Owl(Bubo virginianus)

| Origin: | Most of North and South America, except northern most regions of Alaska and Canada. | |||
| Habitat: | Forests, rocky, wide open areas and sometimes even in cities. | |||
| Nesting: | Uses an old nest of other large birds in a tree or cliff, or even on the ground. Usually lays 2-3 white eggs but sometimes more. The eggs take 28-30 days to hatch. This bird has quite an aggressive character and will attack anyone who gets too close to its nest, especially when there are young. | |||
| Facts: | The Great Horned Owl is the largest and most fierce of the owls in
America. It is closely related to the Eagle Owl. It is a large
bird - approximately 50 cms (20 inches) in length. It has big yellow eyes and prominent ear
tufts. It varies in size and colour depending on its habitat - bigger in cooler areas,
smaller in desert and tropical areas - darker plummage in forest areas, lighter plummage
in desert surroundings. Its prey varies from insects to small animals and even birds as large as turkeys. It is mainly nocturnal but sometimes hunts during the daytime. |
