Ferruginous Hawk

(Buteo regalis)

Origin: North America
Habitat: Hot, dry mountainous or flat areas.
Nesting: On the ground or in trees.
Facts: The Ferruginous Hawk is very large compared to the Harris Hawk and which allows the bird to catch bigger prey. The male birds weigh about 1,059 gms and the females around 1,231 gms. These hawks normally feed on rabbits and often snakes and lizards. They fly close to the ground to find their prey or perch in a prominent place.

Ferruginous Hawks are not used in falconry as much as the Harris Hawk. They are harder to handle and train and are very temperamental.

They prefer open, hilly countryside rather than woodland. Because their natural habitat is deserts or dry areas, their flying can be adversely affected when their feathers get wet in areas of high rainfall.
