|||
| Origin: | The plains of North America, Florida, Central America and southwards to the tip of South America. | |||
| Habitat: | Open grassy prairies. | |||
| Nesting: | Digs its own burrow and lines it with feathers or vegetation. Sometimes takes over an old burrow of an animal such as a fox or badger. Usually lays 6-10 eggs. | |||
| Facts: | The Burrowing Owl is small (24 cms or 8 inches) with long legs suitable for running and walking and a short tail. It is usually spotted above with barred marking below and bright yellow eyes. It has many similarities to the Little Owl. The burrow is used not only for nesting but also as a refuge during the day. This owl hunts mainly at night by swooping from a high vantage point onto its prey. It feeds mainly on insects, especially grasshoppers, although it can take larger prey such as lizards, mice or small birds. | |||
